"Johanne Marie was the first of the seven daughters to come to America, coming to Clarkfield in Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. She married three times. Arden's father was Rasmus Anderson. Her third husband, Matt Jurgenson, was the father of Mildred, Judith, Erling and Bennett. We called her Shanna and she was a very hard working woman, being on the farm with a big family and very concerned about her two nieces and nephew after her sister, Oline, died. Matt Jurgenson brought four children to this marriage: Martha, Jorgen, Martin and Severin." -- Grønevik, Alma Stewart (1987), 1987.10

"Johanna, 3rd [sic] oldest, was married twice. First [sic] husband, Rasmus Muri, passed away in 1901. She and her young son, Arden, returned to Norway and stayed one year. Arden farms the home place at Clarkfield. Returning from Norway, Johanna married Matthias Jorgenson. They had four children: Mildred, Judy, Erling, and Bennet." -- Reggie Vick.6

"We always called Johanne "Shanna," which I imagine is a child's way of saying Johanna. She was a wonderful cook; her kitchen always smelled so good. One year she came to Portage and helped Mother make quilts. Our living room was full of quilting frame for weeks." -- Betty Stewart.11
