"Alf Solberg, 83

Alf Mathias Solberg, 83, Coeur d'Alene, died Thursday, July 24, 2003, at his home. He was born on Oct. 6, 1919, in Bergen, Norway, to Alfred and Emma (Nave) Solberg.

At the age of 10 Alf and his family moved from Norway to Chicago. He graduated high school there and then entered business college. He joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served during WWII. After his discharge he married Mildred Kirchner in April of 1946, and they moved to Staten Island, New York. In 1951 they moved to Coeur d'Alene and built the Pines Motel, which they operated until 1971. Alf began selling insurance for several years and from 1991 to 2002 he and Mildred managed the Oak Crest Mobile Home Park.

He was a member of the Masonic Temple and was a Shriner. He also belonged to the Eagles in Coeur d'Alene. He enjoyed bowling, doing carpentry and being around people.

Alf is survived by his wife, Mildred Solberg, at home; daughter and son-in-law Karen and Jerry Riebe, Houston, Tex; son Kenneth Solberg, Coeur d'Alene; daughter and son-in-law Kathy and Richard Alden, Olympia, Wash. and six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by his brother, Lief.

Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, P.O.
