Ola Martin Pederson Vik1

M, b. 19 August 1816, d. 1861
Father*Peder Olson Vik1 (7 Jul 1782-1875)
Mother*Else Katrine Olsdatter Tonning1 (1781-1847)
Ola Martin Pederson Vik was born on 19 August 1816 at Vik, Nedstryn, Innvik, Sogn og Fjordane, NorwayB,G, Mother listed as "jormfrue Else Catrina Tonning", which I think means midwife.1,2,3 He was the son of Peder Olson Vik and Else Katrine Olsdatter Tonning.1 Ola Martin Pederson Vik was christened on 10 September 1816 at Innvik, Innvik, Sogn og Fjordane, NorwayB,G.1,4

Ola Martin Pederson Vik married Valborg Larsdatter Lille Øen, daughter of Lars Waldemarson Lille Øen and Ragnilde Olsdatter Hessevogbakke, on 3 October 1847 at Davik, Davik, Sogn og Fjordane, NorwayB,G, at age 31.5,6
Ola Martin Pederson Vik died in 1861 at Innvik, Sogn og Fjordane, NorwayB,G.7
"Ola Martin Vik, died at age 44 in 1861, was an only child, and was set to study. He was a law student (but did not receive the university degree.) For a time he worked at the tax collection office, then he was at home with his parents. He then came to the house of his mother's sister, married to P. Frimann in Davik. They were childless and he, being one of their main benefactors, inherited about 5000 specialdaler from them and, consequently, was the wealthiest man in Nordfjord.

While in Davik, he made the acquaintance of "a poor beauty", Valborg Litleøyna, who was living in the Frimann household. They were married. After his mother died, he moved home to Vik and, for a time, was assistance sheriff to his father. In 1846, the King gave him permission to work with silver and gold "for the fun of it". He was not able to manage his great wealth. In just a few years his wealth was (also) melted down to just a few clumps, and he did not get the sheriff's position. When at his peak, he owned the splendid Vik farm with costly buildings and an exceptionally fine inventory (some of this has been on the farm to most recent times), Olde-Church with its property, 18 farms at Sunnmore, Frimannslund in Davik, Haugen in Markom, Risoyane (islands), half of Visnes, and more.

Of the fine inventory, mention may be made of a costly silver pitcher (sold at auction to Mr. James Cowan), furniture in the Empire and Rococco style, a crystal chandelier, an English chime clock, mirrors of beveled glass, and much more. Much of his money was lost when a relative in Alesund, for whom Ola had been guarantor, had gone bankrupt. When the creditors and others insisted on payment, Ola locked himself into an old outbuilding ("Freden" -literally "the Peace")(now at Tunaal) with his silver work and his (drinking) glass and tried to forget his troubles and woes. In the house, where there had been hospitality, stayed, among others, the first English sports-fisherman in Stryn, Mr. James Cowan, who was fond of the place. Pet Frimann's housekeeper, Elisabeth M. Roll (see this name) lived out her final days here (She died at age 75 in 1847) The widow, Valborg, was married a second time, to Peder Olson Maurset, who worked for sheriff G. Mugaas."
