Sophia kept a boarding house with 2 servants and the value of the property was listed in her name. Occupations of the boarders include three harness makers (among them son George Jr.), a wheat buyer, clerk, saloon keeper, 2 painters, a foundry worker, and a pattern maker in 1870.3

The Great Northfield Bank Robbery took place on the seventh of September in 1876 in Northfield, about 45 miles northwest of Rochester in Rice County. The family story says "someone in the family", probably Sophia Stewart, ran a boarding house in Rochester. Two mysterious strangers took a room the night of the robbery. The house was being remodeled at the time, and (supposedly) many years later, when the walls were again taken down, a gun of the correct period was found in the wall. We have always speculated that it could be Jesse James's gun. Harold Stewart has it at Rochester, MNB,G.8
Sophia A. Kling died on 13 January 1904 at Rochester, MNB,G, at age 85.2,9 She was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Rochester, Olmsted, Minnesota, USAB,G.

Checked 20170106, informant: Betty Stewart; probable original informant: Marie Stewart. This story is recorded as a family tale; it is not certain which people might have been involved. With the 1880 census data, it now seems likely to have been George W. Stewart Sr. and Sophia Kling Stewart, or Sophia depending when they were divorced.
