George W. Stewart II enlisted (as a private) on February 18, 1864, for the "duration of three years or the end of the war." He was mustered in at Ft. Snelling, St. Paul, Minnesota, and assigned to the 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 14th Corps, Army of the Cumberland, as a drummer.

His division saw the following action: Mill Springs, 1/18/1862; Shiloh or Pittsburg Landing, 4/6&7/1862; Perryville, 10/8/1862; Trinne, 3/2/1863; New Ulm, 5/1/1863; Tullahonna, 6/23/1863; Chickamauga, 9/19&20/1863; Saakont Mt., 11/24/1863; Mission Ridge, 11/25/1863; Buzzard's Roost, 7/25&26/1864 (the first battle G.W. Stewart could have been in); Resaca, Rome, Dallas, Kenesaw Mt., Peach Tree Creek, Marietta, Utsy Creek, Jonesboro and the siege of Atlanta, from May 15 to July 4, 1864.

He served with General William T. Sherman on the famous "March To The Sea," and in the campaign of the Carolinas, including the siege of Savanna, Bentonville and near Raleigh from 12/10/1864 to 4/11/1865, including the surrender of General [Joseph E. ] Johnston's army. He marched in the Grande Review in Washington D.C. on May 24, 1865. He was discharged from the Union Army on July 11, 1865 in Kentucky.

Returning to Rochester, he married Charlotte Isabelle Renslow (in one place she is listed as Elizabeth.)

As a youth, he drove a stagecoach between Lake City and Winona, Minnesota. He also worked as a harness maker, upholsterer, house mover, proprietor of a billiard hall and owner of a laundry.

Harold Byers Stewart has the regimental certificate with the information about G.W. Stewart's Civil War involvement along with his rifle from that war.

One paper I have says he was born in Goshen, Indiana. (Betty Stewart)9
