"SAILBOAT FOUNDERS IN LAKE ANTOINE WITH A DISASTROUS RESULT. ONE MAN DROWNS WHILE DUCK HUNTING AND ANOTHER NARROWLY ESCAPES THE SAME FATE.

Eugene Boyer and a young man, named Gust Waffen went out on Lake Antoine last Saturday to hunt ducks. A strong wind was blowing and when they were about a quarter of a mile from shore their sail boat shipped a sea and sank to the bottom.

Young Waffen with the aid of an oar succeeded in reaching the shore and Mr. Boyer threw off his coat and made preparations to struggle for his life but he was doubtless seized by a cramp and sank to the bottom within twenty feet of where the boat went down in about ten feet of water. The young man when he reached the shore immediately gave the alarm and an attempt was made at once to recover the body. But owing to the strong wind it was found unsafe to work on the lake and further search had to be postponed until night when the wind went down and the search could be prosecuted in safety. The body was discovered about two o'clock the next morning.

Funeral services were hold [sic] at the Presbyterian church last Tuesday. Mr. Boyer was a carpenter and builder by trade, a hard working, industrious and good citizen, of kindly and genial disposition and esteemed by all who knew him. He came to this city three years ago, and about two years purchased a lot near Lake Antoine and built himself a comfortable home planning no doubt, to surround himself with such home comforts as his means would permit and spend the rest of his days an esteemed and useful citizen of this city.

He was a soldier, having served three years in the late war. The day before his death he was one of the veterans who assisted in raising the flag at the school house. His untimely death will be deeply regretted by all who knew him.

He leaves a widow and six children."8
