"They (parents, Ola Vik and Valborg) placed their hopes in their son, Peder Elvin Vik, who attended a "citizen" school in Bergen and later was at the trade office in Bergen. He then returned home, but died at age 22 in 1873. His half brother, Ola Martin Pederson Vik, was not able to return the family to its position and property or save the family estate; he therefore emigrated to America, and the Vik farm, with its splendid buildings and some of the old possessions and rich inventory, came into the hands of strangers." -- "THE VIK FAMILY IN MORE RECENT TIMES" (Arne Øvresæt's book.)1
