Julia Louise McGowan was born on 9 September 1889 at Manistee, Manistee, Michigan, USAB,G, daughter of John McGowan and Julia Ann Hoffman.1
Julia Louise McGowan married Phillip George Hoefling, son of Frederick Hoefling and Agnes Scheuermann, on 14 May 1908 at West Allis, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USAB,G.2,1 Julia Louise McGowan also went by the name of Lulu McGown.1,3
The Hoefling dog was named Rum. He was a large dog, and pulled a sled in a shetland pony harness. He loved (or hated) cats, and one day when the cat went behind the piano, he was able to move the piano to try to reach the cat. --Jean (Hoefling) DeLeon circa 1940.4
A newspaper article comments on Julia's four WW II service sons: LeRoy, Phillip, Sinclair and Clyde. LeRoy and Phillip were in the Army; Sinclair and Clyde in the Navy. In fact, there were five sons in service in WW II: Phil, Sinclair, Clyde, LeRoy and Don. Don was in the Navy. The Hoefling family was one of two in Saginaw with five in the service circa 1944 at Saginaw, Saginaw, Michigan, USAB,G.5,4 An article on her 80th birthday mentions she was a member of Saginaw Rebekah Lodge 253, Salina Order of Eastern Star chapter 439, and the Daughters of Union Veterans of Civil War, tent 44, Owosso on 12 September 1969 at Saginaw, MichiganB,G.6
Julia Louise McGowan died on 17 May 1977 at Saginaw, MichiganB,G, at age 87 survived by six sons, four daughters, 28 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.1 Her obituary notes she was a member of Eastern Star, Rebekah Lodge No. 253, a charter member of the Gold Star Mothers of America, and Saginaw Chapter of DAR Blue Star Mothers. on 17 May 1977 at Saginaw, MichiganB,G.7 She was buried on 20 May 1977 at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Saginaw, Saginaw, Michigan, USA, 43.396111, -83.9508063B,G.1,7
